Upcoming EVs: For a long time now, Maruti Suzuki India has been delaying the production of Electric Vehicles. There have already been announcements by the representatives regarding the electric vehicles, but nothing has come to fruition so far. Maruti Suzuki had announced plans to launch its electric vehicle way back in 2018 but delayed its decision. On being interrogated, the company representative claimed that due to the lack of EV charging station infrastructure in India, it wouldn’t be a good decision to launch an electric vehicle for now.
Now that Maruti Suzuki is looking forward for launching the Wagon R electric car in the coming days, this is exciting news for those of you who are looking for a fun and environmentally friendly way to get around town. However, the Maruti Suzuki spokesperson has not given an exact date but has made it clear that the planning and testing for the electric vehicles are already going as per schedule. He also said that India’s first lithium ion battery factory has already been commissioned by Suzuki and its collaborators, Toshiba and Denso. The manufacturing unit is located in Gujarat and has an investment of Rs. 1,200 crore.
The MS spokesperson had already made it clear that manufacturing an EV at a price of less than Rs. 12 lakh is not feasible. However, if we look at other motor companies, we will find the Tata Tigor EV and Nexon EV are priced at 12 lakhs and 15 lakhs, respectively. So, the Waggon R electric can also be expected to cost in the 15-lakh price segment.
With companies like Hyundai, Tata, and others already making big moves in the Electric Vehicle segment, it is sure that Maruti Suzuki will definitely make its way into the Electric vehicle segment very soon. The Maruti Suzuki team has planned for the electric vehicle segment till 2025, but with the government offering FAME subsidies and financial benefits to the EV makers, it is the perfect time for Maruti Suzuki to step into the field. Also, the rapidly growing number of charging stations will clear out Maruti’s biggest concern of a lack of charging stations and high-priced batteries.
